SWIFT ACTION STOPS INCREASES IN FARM TAXES
(Editorial ~ 02/15/98)
An effort by the State Tax Commission to sharply increase higher property taxes for Missouri farm acreage was rolled back by timely action by the General Assembly earlier this month. Good for the lawmakers. It didn't seem to make much sense to most Missourians to raise real estate taxes by double digits at the same time state government is refunding hundreds of millions in overpayments of taxes across the state...

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE: THE BITE OF THE CENTURY
(Column ~ 02/15/98)
The wrestling community has recently added Mike Tyson to its roster and I'd just like to point out the marketing potential of adding Marv Albert to the wrestling community as well. You could bill a Tyson-Albert match as the Bite of the Century. Of course, the ensuing action figures would be too dangerous for children and hey, don't leave that Tyson doll alone with Barbie, but then again what's the Albert doll doing to Skipper? Ouch! Yes!...

LETTERS: PRESIDENT PUSHES MORE GOVERNMENT
(Letter to the Editor ~ 02/15/98)
To the editor: I watched the State of the Union Address the other night. It was tour de force performance from me (I sat through the whole thing without medical assistance) and from the president who, in more modest times, would have been too ashamed to face the nation let along do it while displaying a level of political genius rarely seen in this century. ...

PLANS USE FUEL TAX FOR AIRPORT FUNDING
(Editorial ~ 02/15/98)
With federal funding for airports having declined or been eliminated entirely in recent years, aviation boosters have been casting about for revenue to continue operating control towers such as the one at Cape Girardeau's airport. These officials are looking to state government to fill the gap and are advancing what appears a reasonable means of producing the needed revenue. ...

MISSOURI COMMENTARY: AFTER WEEKS OF THE LATEST SAGA: TAKING PROSPERITY OVER PROPRIETY
(Column ~ 02/15/98)
When the Monica Lewinsky matter first broke, my initial reaction was that we might well be in the fourth quarter of the Clinton presidency. I verified my political acumen with a call to the "Sage of Missouri Sages." "He's history," he said flat out and hung up...

KINDER'S COMMENTARY: JUDICIARY COUNSEL DURING NIXON YEARS SEES MANY CLINTON FLAWS
(Column ~ 02/15/98)
One of the most interesting developments of the last two years was the re-emergence of an elderly attorney named Jerome Zeifman. Who is this obscure gentleman? Well, for starters, he is a lifelong Democrat. Of far more importance is the fact that will be central when his obituary is written: In 1974, Zeifman was chief counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, the same committee that voted the articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon. ...

Sam and Helen Bryant may be excused if at first they can't recall how they met. It was, after all, a long time ago -- 60 years to be exact. "We met at a birthday party. Three months later we were married," Helen said. "We just clicked." The Bryants were among 250 couples who crowded into the Holiday Inn Convention Center Saturday for Schnucks' 20th Valentine's Day Celebration. Couples who have been married for at least 50 years were invited by Schnucks to join in the celebration...

RACERS TAKE OVC FLAG; MURRAY CLINCHES SHARE OF TITLE, TOPS SE 82-71

Like a heavyweight boxing champion, Murray State's Racers withstood every barrage Southeast Missouri State University threw at them Saturday night. NOTRE DAME GIRLS TRIP SPRINGFIELD

At first glance, the Notre Dame girls basketball record doesn't have the look of a state-ranked team. Seven losses seems a bit extreme to be considered one of the best teams in Class 2A. But when all seven of those losses come at the hands of solid 3A and 4A schools, the record begins to look a little more acceptable...

FIGHTIN' IRISH TOO MUCH FOR 'DOGS
(High School Sports ~ 02/15/98)
Maybe the Notre Dame boys basketball team could have given Springfield Catholic a better football game Saturday night. That might be a stretch considering the Bulldogs don't field a football program and the Fightin' Irish are the defending Class 2A champions. But judging by Springfield's 86-62 drubbing of the Bulldogs, Notre Dame coach Chris Janet might have been willing to hit the gridiron with the 2A powerhouse...
