BIRTHRIGHT'S DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
(Editorial ~ 10/22/97)
For nearly 30 years a small, little-known organization called Birthright has offered the best efforts of its Christian volunteers to provide positive alternatives to abortion. Headed locally by longtime director Dolores Mier, Birthright has assisted thousands of girls and women in trouble with pregnancy tests, counseling, support, adoption referrals, financial assistance, lodging and more. For the first time in that history, Birthright held its state convention here in Cape Girardeau County...

LATE-TERM ABORTION DEBATE HEATS UP AGAIN
(Editorial ~ 10/22/97)
And so, the nation will again revisit the subject that many sanitized mainstream media accounts refer to as "a controversial late-term abortion procedure." Both houses of the U.S. Congress have again passed a ban on partial-birth abortions. This the House accomplished, yet again, by the veto-proof margin of 296-132. Senate action followed with approval by an overwhelming 64 votes, which means supporters are three precious votes short of the necessary two-thirds to override a presidential veto...

MISSOURI WATCH: A TALE OF TWO CITIZENS
(Column ~ 10/22/97)
A wise old politician from St. Louis' unique and charming Italian neighborhood used to say he never worried about matters he knew about, only the ones he didn't know about. Since this particular denizen of The Hill knew just about everything and everyone within his political domain, what used to bother him the most were events in the state Capitol at Jefferson City...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 10/22/97)
RECENTLY I went to a job interview and they asked me for a urine sample for some reason or another. Evidently they wanted to know if I used drugs or something. So I simply said, no, I don't, but I will take your test. And, if I test negative, you all owe me $500. They agreed to that, and yes, it was negative, but they repaid their trust in me and I'm still working there. Why don't they believe employees? Why do they have to go through that stupid process? Thanks for letting me speak out...

PUMPKINS PLENTIFUL, LOOK GOOD; REGARDLESS OF TASTES, BUYERS CAN FIND THEM

This year's pumpkin crop may not be the best ever in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois, but it could rank among the best years of the 1990s. Patches of pumpkins are found throughout the two states but exact numbers are hard to come by because the Department of Agriculture's Statistical Services doesn't take a pumpkin count in either state...

STRANGER THAN FICTION: WOMEN SHOULD TAKE A STAND -- DON'T SHAVE YOUR LEGS
(Column ~ 10/22/97)
Men would faint if they had to smell Nair for 10 minutes. It was a beautiful Sunday. The breeze was warm, the sky was deep blue and the bright sunshine picked up the highlights in my leg hair. Yes, you heard right. Leg hair. See, it's getting to be pants season, the season when all of the good little girls who obediently shaved their legs all summer just let loose. Hey, if the hair isn't causing runs in your pantyhose, why mess with it?...
