LETTERS: WORDS CAN BE PROBLEMS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 05/08/97)
To the editor: Words are how we communicate. Communication leads to understanding, or, at times, misunderstanding. With such a beautiful language, it seems unfortunate that it is so easy to put one's foot in one's mouth. Playing with words is an interesting game. I recall a young woman at a youth church meeting describe Jesus as a "perfect Liver."...

CITY'S PLAN ON SUBDIVISION ANNEXATION MAKES GOOD SENSE
(Editorial ~ 05/08/97)
Cities with vision must look ahead. This is especially true in terms of annexation. Cape Girardeau is considering a new policy that affects subdivision developers outside the city limits. FLOOD BUYOUTS AVOID FUTURE DAMAGE RISKS
(Editorial ~ 05/08/97)
Flood buyouts are an expensive way to clear out flood-prone areas. But every time floodwaters rises, the wisdom of the buyouts is underscored. Flood buyouts are the best way to rid cities, counties, states and the federal government of properties that flood time and time again. Paying out insurance claims multiple times is not only outlandish, it is foolish. It is a drain on the taxpayers' already overburdened pocketbook...

LETTERS: INSPECT OLDER VEHICLES
(Letter to the Editor ~ 05/08/97)
To the editor: I think moving the state vehicle inspection back to 3-year-old cars would be a compromise rather than abolishing it altogether. I don't see any benefit in inspecting new or nearly new cars, but certainly older cars, I think, need to be inspected. I think the public would feel reassured by leaving inspection for older cars and other vehicles in place...
