To the editor: When it comes to managing our valuable forest resources, the public should know that scientific professional judgment denies proposals that originate from federal representatives propounding the so-called Contract With America. In an attempt to promote logging, but doing so under the pretense of promoting healthy forests, bills have been introduced into and passed by both the House of Representatives (HR 1158) and the Senate (S 391) and subsequently signed by President Clinton. ...

To the editor: I noted with interest your brief Oct. 10 editorial concerning local access (on cable television). I do want to correct one part of your editorial concerning the combination of C-SPAN and local access. Over a year ago, the local cable franchise, TCI Cablevision of Missouri, requested the city to allow them to move C-SPAN to the local-access channel temporarily, and I recall it being for a year, until the cable company could expand its channel capacity. ...

The Cape Girardeau Regional Airport got some good news recently. The city learned that a Federal Aviation Administration official has determined the control tower at the airport is "mission essential." While it doesn't guarantee federal funding for the tower next year, the designation certainly sounds promising...

On Monday, hundreds of thousands of black men are expected to converge on Washington, D.C. Described as a call for black men to come together to lift themselves from the inner-city spiral of crime, drugs and unemployment, the Million Man March aims to "show the world" that the majority of black men stay in school, work hard and care for their families, according the march organizer, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan...

Thanks to some hard work by Betty Chong and Dr. Helen Nevitt, a more diverse group of Cape Girardeau students will participate in gifted programs. Chong, director of special services for the city's public schools, and Nevitt, an assistant professor at Southeast Missouri State University, thought there was a better way to determine if a student qualified for gifted classes. A Fredericktown teen was killed Friday morning in a one-vehicle accident in Madison County.
