A series of electrical storms -- with vivid displays of lightning, booming thunder and heavy rain -- rumbled over parts of southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri early Tuesday. The wind gusts of up to 40 mph disrupted electrical service to about 500 Union Electric Company customers in the Cape Girardeau area...

After years of perfecting pirouettes and learning leaps, a group of Cape Girardeau dancers finally got their reward. On Aug. 1 they won the national dance championships sponsored by Starpower National Talent Competition. To the editor: Just recently I had the opportunity of visiting the very beautiful and most impressive Trail of Tears State Park with Dr. Walter F. Kempe of Tulsa, Okla. Its detailed history along with the interesting exhibits makes Trail of Tears park most adventurous and memorable. Those who haven't visited Trail of Tears park have yet to see one of the most beautiful and educational places Cape Girardeau has to offer...

JACKSON - Five new school buses for the Jackson School District won't arrive before the start of school later this month as expected. Superintendent Wayne Maupin told school board members Tuesday delivery of the buses was delayed until later this year because of a fire at the bus manufacturing plant...

Finding a motel room in Cape Girardeau could prove difficult this weekend. The Holiday Inn and Victorian Inn, which combined have 300 rooms, already are booked solid. All 800 motel rooms in the city could be filled this weekend because of the Black Family Reunion and a state baseball tournament in Cape Girardeau, the Sikeston Bootheel Rodeo and the Jour de Fete celebration in Ste.
