Dear Editor: I am writing in reference to the Doctors vs. Lawyers basketball game that will be held on February 17, 1994, to benefit the Community Counseling Center. First of all, I would like to say that I believe that both the doctors and the lawyers would agree that they would prefer to meet "on the court" rather than "in court."...

To the Editor: As it does each year, the New Year's mail brought tax forms for us to complete and return. The back page of the 1993 booklet of forms and schedules contained the following information: "In fiscal year 1992, ... Federal income was $1,090.5 billion ..." "... 79 percent of total outlays were financed by tax receipts"...

Jobs -- the capacity to create and sustain them -- are the key to economic prosperity. And the key to making and keeping jobs is an enterprise's ability to make ends meet. If the business community can properly ask anything of government, it is to not conceive obstacles that hold back commercial viability, hence stalling the creation of jobs. ...

JACKSON -- Marvin Sides, a 13-year veteran of the Jackson Police Department, has been appointed the city's new police chief. The Jackson Board of Aldermen has named Sides, 46, to replace Larry Koenig, who vacated the position to become director of personnel for the city of Jackson...

The director of the Missouri Department of Health is anticipating considerable initial opposition to a major health care reform bill unveiled by Gov. Mel Carnahan and House Speaker Bob Griffin Tuesday. "Everybody with a stake in the health system will be there as a player, said Dr. Coleen Kivlahan. "But we all need to give a little in order to get a good health system in place."...

The stage is set for April's municipal election in Cape Girardeau as voters in Wards 2 and 6 selected their candidates Tuesday. Boyd Gaming Corp. announced Tuesday that it will donate $500,000 to the Colonial Cape Girardeau Foundation if the company is selected as the city's riverboat gaming operator. JACKSON -- After flushing more than 1 million gallons of water through the city's water lines to rid the water supply of a petroleum-based contaminate, public works officials declared Jackson's water supply safe to drink late Tuesday. Clyde Harvel remembers the pain. "My heart felt like it was trying to come out of my chest. "It felt like somebody was kicking me and I was feeling it inside," said the 37-year-old Anna, Ill., man. "It was a real jarring thing. It was scary." Harvel said he awoke with the severe chest pain around 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 11. He ended up in Southeast Missouri Hospital's new Chest Pain Center and a day later he underwent triple bypass surgery...
