THE PUBLIC MIND: GAMBLING DOESN'T SQUARE WITH SCRIPTURES
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: Even though it seems that all that can be said has been said, just one more time, for Christians, a "yes" vote for riverboat gambling is not an option. It shouldn't take a biblical scholar or an assertive clergyman to convince us that gambling is anti-thetical to the tenets of Scripture, even though there are no direct references or statements regarding it...

THE PUBLIC MIND: FUNNY, ISN'T IT? THOSE THAT TAKE MORE THAN THEY GIVE MAY BECOME NEW `HEROES'
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: The separation of church/state issues always seem to surface in any discussion of issues that concern the morality of an act. The very idea that church/state issues exist imply that there is a role of both the church and the state. If the only purpose of the church is to provide a physical structure in which to conduct wedding ceremonies and funeral services, then clearly the role of the church no longer has any influence on our culture, and any church/state debate is moot. ...

ON RIVERBOAT GAMBLING
(Editorial ~ 06/06/93)
The Southeast Missourian, as evidenced continually in this space, is committed to Cape Girardeau's growth and the region's betterment. And if we had a list of choices for industries that might locate here and enhance the local economy, riverboat gambling would not top that list. ...

DON'T SELL THE CITY'S SOUL FOR GAMBLING
(Editorial ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: How can Cape citizens sell this city's soul to the devil by allowing the casino riverboat to come here just because of a promise of jobs and more money? Gambling will generate big bucks, but at what cost to our community in terms of promoting the wrong things? The Boyd Group promises that they'll give money to the city and to our schools, while their very presence will tell our children that they don't have to work hard to get ahead in life; you may gamble your way to prosperity...

THE PUBLIC MIND: REVENUE FROM GAMBLING WOULD BE POSITIVE FOR CITY
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: I wish to urge support for a positive vote on the riverboat gaming issue, Tuesday, June 8. Let's not pass up the opportunity for increased tax revenue, particularly the $360,000 that will go for our public schools. Let's do something positive for our schools and something positive for the future of Cape Girardeau...

THE PUBLIC MIND: SELF-CONTROL IS NEEDED TO CURB ADDITION TO GAMBLING, AS IT IS IN ANYTHING ELSE
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: The controversy over riverboat gaming has caused me to speak up and voice my opinion. There are several reasons why I'm voting "yes" on this issue. Mainly, I like the entertainment value provided by riverboat gaming. It's intended to be harmless much like the church bingo fests where you pay money to play a card on the "chance" you might win. You know, there are people addicted to wholesome bingo, too. Why is bingo more acceptable?...

THE PUBLIC MIND: WILL WE SHOOT OURSELVES IN THE FOOT OR SHOOT DEAD RIVERBOAT GAMBLING MEASURE?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: The issue facing the voters of Cape Girardeau next week has been dubbed an economic issue. Indeed riverboat gambling is an economic issue which raises several questions. Has anyone ever known an individual who established and maintained his livelihood solely as a gambler? I've not and I have never heard of anyone who has. If one person cannot survive economically by gambling, would someone explain to me how an entire community of individuals can expect to survive economically?...

THE PUBLIC MIND: CAPE GIRARDEAU HAS THE STRENGTH OF CHARACTER TO COEXIST WITH RIVERBOAT GAMBLING
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)
To the Editor: As a city, it's obvious that Cape Girardeau has strong moral fiber. How can you miss the picture of overwhelming strength and guidance provided by the combined operations of churches and businesses within her limits? The overall moral attitude of this community is a result of concrete ethics on the part of the business and professional community, continued growth of the old as well as newly established churches and the most basic but strongest efforts of discipline in the family home atmosphere.. ...

THE PUBLIC MIND: GAMBLING: WHAT MORE COULD WE WANT?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)

THE PUBLIC MIND: UNTIL WE STOP SEEING COLOR AND START SEEING PEOPLE, OUR COUNTRY FACES DETERIORIATION
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/06/93)

SHELVES MAKE ROOM FOR WHAT FAMILIES HOLD DEAR
(Column ~ 06/06/93)
I don't know when I first became enamored with shelves. Perhaps it was the two fireplace mantels in the old farm home. On the kitchen mantel-shelf was the kerosene lamp, a box of matches, assorted medicines things out of the reach of children. On the living room fireplace mantel was the wonderful, old ornate clock that struck the hours, marking the passing of time that meant nothing at all to me then. Also, there were two little hand painted vases, pansies and roses being the designs...
