JACKSON -- Corn and soybean yields in Southeast Missouri may be down this fall. "The corn harvest is winding down in many areas," said Gerald Bryan, an agronomy specialist with the University of Missouri Extension Service. "What we're seeing is a wide variation in the corn harvest, ranging from 50 to 200 bushels an acre. Overall, the corn crop may be down by as much as 30 percent."...

Cape Girardeau City Councilman Doug Richards said Monday he thinks the city should reduce solid wastes fees as part of a city-wide recycling program slated to begin next month. A child died after his parents' car ran over him in the driveway of their home here, and a man was killed when the truck he was driving was struck by a train near Cairo, Ill., authorities said. The Cape Girardeau City Council failed Monday to unanimously endorse a plan to purchase the city's water system from Union Electric. The council already has approved a measure to place an $11.8 million bond issue on the November ballot to allow voters to decide whether the city should purchase the water system. That price includes $8.5 million for the water system and additional funds for operating costs and system improvements...

Chris Ludwig's fourth-graders at West Lane Elementary School were among more than a thousand school children receiving newspapers Monday, the start of the second year for the Southeast Missourian's Newspaper In Education program. Two Cape Girardeau day-care center operators say a need for child care for children of students at Southeast Missouri State University has prompted them to begin offering nighttime and drop-in care.
