Dr. John and Ann Shelton of Cape Girardeau celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 26, 2004, with a reception at their home at Chateau Girardeau, followed by a dinner.
Approximately 150 guests attended the event. Hosts were their children and spouses, Suzanne Shelton and Michael Sump of Carrollton, Texas, Elizabeth Shelton of Atlanta, Ga., and Brian and Penny Shelton of Tyler, Texas.
Dr. Doyle Dumas of Tennessee performed the same songs he sang at the couple's wedding. Dr. Peter Hilty of Cape Girardeau read a poem he composed for the event.
The Sheltons were married June 26, 1954, in Owensboro, Ky.
In addition to their children, the couple has a grandson, Jacob Shelton.
Shelton retired as professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University and as minister of music at Centenary United Methodist Church. He is still active in music, directing the choral group at Chateau, performing recitals and accompanying vocalists.
Mrs. Shelton, a former teacher and guide for the Convention and Visitors Bureau, is involved in church and community organizations.
