The new Safe House for Women has hired a shelter manager and is training volunteers in preparation for a planned Nov. 1 opening; Bettye Hargens of Jackson is the new shelter manager.
First National Bank, a new operation in Cape Girardeau, opens in the former Colonial Federal Savings and Loan building, 2027 Broadway; its grand opening is set for Oct. 14.
U.S. District Judge James Meredith says the District Court has been notified by the General Services Administration a contract to raze the old federal building and courthouse at the corner of Broadway and Fountain Street is scheduled to be awarded in December or January.

In a decision that may have far-reaching effect and result in similar suits throughout the cotton-growing area of the nation, Judge Henry H. Schult in Circuit Court at New Madrid, Missouri, yesterday issued a temporary injunction restraining a cotton buyer at Parma, Missouri, from collecting a 7-cent per pound penalty on cotton produced on land not participating in the government's AAA program.
The Cape Transit Corp. has applied to the city council for permission to extend bus lines to the Red Star area and to the cement plant to serve the suburban areas; a proposal for a 60-day trial run was approved.
Dr. G.B. Schulz, who recently purchased the Coerver property at the corner of Broadway and Frederick Street for a consideration of $12,000, will move into the home Oct. 24; as the house is one of the largest in Cape Girardeau, it is thought by many Schulz plans to open a sanitarium there.
At a meeting of the Cape Girardeau School Board last night, it was decided to establish a primary room in Central High School, and Lydia Irion was appointed teacher; at least 45 small pupils living within a few blocks of the school will attend classes there; this should relieve some of the overcrowding at Jefferson and Broadway schools.
