Few people attend a Vision 2000 town-hall meeting in the evening, but several called the televised program with questions and comments about six goals for the city to attain by the year 2000; the meeting is the first such gathering to combine a panelist discussion of Vision 2000 goals with video presentations and a live call-in cable television format.

Final enrollment figures at Southeast Missouri State University show an increase of 34 students in the fall, full-time equivalancy (FTE) total; Southeast's total FTE enrollment stands at 7,215.

1966

St. Andrew Lutheran Church has completed the purchase of property at the corner of West Cape Rock Drive and Kingshighway; the property was purchased from Ethel Lewis for the expansion of the youth program of the church.

Rains are holding up construction of Route V (Egypt Mills Road), which in turn is blocking access to Nell Holcomb School; classes won't be held Monday and probably not Tuesday, either; last week, pupils attended school Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, when the gravel roads were passable.

1941

A strong wind, accompanied by rain, the first in 14 days in Cape Girardeau, early last night caused some disruption in electric service in the south and southwest sections of town; for a time, the town of Chaffee, Missouri, was thrown into total darkness; the storm was apparently a far-flung segment of the gale that earlier slashed the Gulf coast along Texas and Louisiana.

The story of how the FBI trailed a Nazi spy, who came to Cape Girardeau during his travels in August, was told in part during a law-enforcement officers meeting here recently by G.B. Norris, head of the FBI office in St. Louis, but not for publication; however, the full story was disclosed by Norris yesterday after the arrest of the suspect -- Kurt Frederick Ludwig.

Dr. F.D. Rea, who has been associated with Dr. R.E. Cunningham in the practice of osteopathy for the past two years, left yesterday for Brookville, Pennsylvania, where he will continue to practice his profession; his wife and children have been in the East visiting during the summer and will join him at Brookville.

A.K. Bohannon has announced the opening of the dancing season at Anderson Hall on Good Hope Street; dances will be held every Saturday night during winter.
