A new source of help is available to local flood victims through the Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau; the fund of $95,731 has been established through a special collection taken up by the 64 parishes and 21 mission churches in the diocese.

"Edgewater" will no longer be part of Cape Girardeau telephone numbers, when new directories are distributed in November; the new book will contain all-digit telephone numbers for the Cape Girardeau exchange as well as the others in the directory -- Jackson, Illmo-Scott City, McClure, Illinois, and Oak Ridge.

Invitations have been extended to Richard M. Nixon and Spiro T. Agnew to bring their Republican presidential campaign to Cape Girardeau, but neither Raymond H. Vogel, county chairman, nor Gary Rust, state committeeman, thinks the chances are likely that either will come here.

1943

Bids were received yesterday at Harris Field by the Cape Institute of Aeronautics, Inc., on proposals which will double the size of the existing runways, taxiways and apron areas at the field; one 2,000-foot runway, 100 feet wide, will be constructed of amiesite and would be located northeast by southwest; the present taxiways, both of which are 1,600 feet in length, are to be rebuilt and a 10-foot strip of concrete placed on both sides of them to serve as areas for gasoline trucks; the present concrete apron area in front of the hangars, which measures 90 by 400 feet, will be doubled in area.

The shoe factory has been given an order for the manufacture of Army shoes, and the plant will start on the job some time during the coming week; the original order, first of its kind for the Cape Girardeau factory, calls for about 10,000 pairs of shoes.

1918

The Green Tree saloon in Haarig was shuttered yesterday morning in conformity with the orders from the Cape Girardeau County Court, which revoked the liquor license of Adam Cox at a hearing the latter part of August; it is reported Jim Miller, a former saloon owner in Haarig, is working on a deal to take over the place and operate it until the ban is finally put on the saloon business.

It is reported from Jackson that an airplane landed on the Bingeheimer farm west of the city this afternoon, but it can't be learned what caused the aviator to land there.
