An effort to convince Missouri Department of Transportation Department officials to build an exit off Interstate 55 at Oak Ridge will be supported by the county commission; supporters say the project, which would include an I-55 and Route E interchange they feel is essential to the growth of northwest Cape Girardeau County, also would benefit the Oak Ridge community and school district.

PERRYVILLE, Mo -- The city of Perryville will receive a $1.3 million federal grant from the Economic Development Administration; the grant will allow the city to lengthen the runway at the Perryville Municipal Airport by 1,500 feet and to construct an 8-inch water line to the airport and two industries situated near it.

1965

The Jackson City Council has passed an ordinance calling for a $960,000 bond issue election Oct. 26; the bonds would be for water and sewer department expansion and for construction of a new municipal swimming pool.

Plans for the new Naval Training Center to be erected north of Arena Park are expected to be completed next month and ready for submitting to Naval authorities at Great Lakes, Illinois, reports architect Fred E. Dormeyer Jr.; the building would include slightly more than 22,000 square feet and would be built in a "U" shape, one story high, with the front to face Maria Louise Lane.

1940

The busiest place in Cape Girardeau is the new city park, which teems with activity in preparation for the opening of the SEMO District Fair on Tuesday; arrival of many head of fine race and show horses, cattle and other livestock give the park the appearance of a real fair.

The Rev. John H. Muehlsiepen, for 50 years a priest of the Catholic church and for 30 years pastor of St. Augustine's Church at Kelso, Missouri, dies at Saint Francis Hospital, where he had been a patient since January; the aged priest was born April 9, 1862, in Hoesel, Germany, and came to the United States in 1882.

1915

Constable James H. Howard is in Cape Girardeau serving papers on delinquent taxpayers; about 1,000 tax delinquents have been sued.

The City Drug Store is in a "new" home; while the location is the same, the store has been made over and is new in every respect; a corner entrance has been put in, the interior walls were finished with beaver board, a beautiful tile floor and entirely new set of fixtures of the latest design were installed.
