Thanks to a $150,000 donation from Japanese businessman Yoshihiro Takase, Southeast Missouri State University's proposed College of Business Administration building will include an international center. Takase is a longtime friend and supporter of the university.

The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission, appointed in April 1990, is considering its first applications for local landmark designations. Being considered are Hoche House, 151 S. Spanish St., and a home at 406 N. Louisiana Ave.

The "mopping up" process that always follows the SEMO District Fair is underway in Arena Park. With a rain falling steadily yesterday, the "mopping up" term is apt, but the rain failed to completely daunt fairgoers, and enough people entered the grounds Sunday to push the overall attendance to a new, all-time high of 69,208.

Approximately 100 people attended the 33rd annual service of commemoration at Old McKendree Chapel yesterday afternoon.Guest speaker was Dr. Frank Tucker, retired Methodist minister. A brief tribute was made to the late Fred Naeter and W.H. Wagner by Rush H. Limbaugh. Naeter had served as president and Wagner as treasurer of the chapel's board of trustees.

Despite the hot, dry weather, a large crowd -- 8,059 paid attendance -- turned out yesterday for Cape Girardeau Day. The good showing has fair officials anticipating a record attendance for the District Fair this year. Tonight's grandstand entertainment includes a concert by the Jackson High School band and the society horse show.

Construction of a new type of U.S. Navy sea-going cargo ship in Cape Girardeau looms as at least a possibility, with the Navy announcing it plans to build the boats at points along the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. The cargo boats each will be powered with a battery of 16 marine motors, the size of an automobile or larger.

1916

Thomas M. Williams, former banker, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club, real estate man and later manager of the Freeze Threshing Machine Co., is to be a national bank examiner; he received a letter from the treasury department in Washington yesterday ordering him to report for duty in that city at once.

A young man from near Oak Ridge was at the fairgrounds Sunday morning, gathering up empty whiskey bottles. He had collected more than 500 bottles, which he picked up around the barns and along the north side of the park. He expects to sell the bottles in Appleton.
