A cofferdam is being built by workers in preparation for construction of a new bridge on Highway 34 over Cane Creek, west of Jackson; Robinson Construction of Perryville, Missouri, is the contractor for the $1.14 million project.
Motorists traveling between Cape Girardeau and Jackson will soon find the going easier, as asphalt paving on the Highway 61 project should be completed within the next two weeks; work will still need to be done on the shoulders of the highway, drainage and on grading and seeding of the ground abutting the highway.
The Rev. Melchior Wissman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lester Wissman of Cape Girardeau Route 1, is working with teenagers in the Family Life Program at the St. Pius X Monastery near Pevely, Missouri; ordained a priest on May 22, 1964, Wissman was recently assigned to the monastery, which conducts retreats for married couples and for teens.
Tent poles, exhibit booths, rides and all the other paraphernalia used at the SEMO District Fair fall in rapid succession, as cleanup of the 1965 exposition begins; attendance at the fair was the highest in the last 10 years, the grand total being 64,627.
WASHINGTON -- Secretary Stimson discloses tentative plans to call to active duty approximately 37,000 National Guard officers and men, including the members of the 35th Division on Nov. 25; the 140th Infantry, the Southeast Missouri regiment of the National Guard, which has two companies in Cape Girardeau, is part of the 35th Division.
