The morning rain apparently doesn't make a bit of difference at the SEMO District Fair, which draws an estimated 7,000 people; if anything, the rain cools the fairgrounds down. The parade goes off without a hitch.
Local veterinarians say the flea infestation this year, and the animal and human misery associated with it, is the worst here in at least five years. The prolonged, wet spring provided ideal conditions for fleas.
Hurricane Betsy, centered in Louisiana, is expected to make its influence felt in this area by this evening, sending wet and windy weather to Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois; weather forecasters predict rainfall exceeding two inches in some localities and winds up to 35 miles per hour.
Enrollment for the fall semester at State College passes the 5,000 mark for the first time, an unprecedented jump of about 700 from last year. The new academic year begins in the morning with reports of tight -- and in some cases closed -- classes. Dormitories also are reported to be filled.
JEFFERSON CITY -- The Missouri Supreme Court invalidates Cape Girardeau's city license law because it doesn't impose the same tax on all similar businesses. The court reverses a ruling of the Circuit Court of Cape Girardeau County, which had upheld the law, and nullifies the city's $1,140.75 judgment against the Fred A. Groves Motor Co., for a city license tax due July 16, 1938.
Options on the farm land north of Dutchtown, selected as the site for Cape Girardeau County's proposed airport, will expire Sunday; new options are being prepared by attorneys, and landowners will be interviewed this week in an effort to secure the option renewals. While the Works Progress Administration has approved the plan, the War Department took exception to one article, sending the plans back to the state WPA for revision.
The County Court this week authorized the prosecuting attorney to proceed with efforts to prevent the drainage people from cutting through public roads until provisions are made for bridges across the ditches. It is claimed drainage contractors are about to cut through some of the roads in the south part of the county.
Cape Girardeau is boasting another "new" store: Siebert's Shoe store has been completely remodeled and modernized in every respect.
