The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents has accepted a bid by R.A. Schemel & Associates Inc. for construction of a Missouri Division of Youth Services group home here; the Perryville, Missouri, firm's bid was $1,062,223.
The wife of Vice President Dan Quayle will be in Cape Girardeau on Tuesday to attend a breakfast with area Republicans, tour the WomanCare facility at Saint Francis Medical Center and learn about earthquake preparedness; Marilyn Tucker Quayle's visit will be hosted by congressman Bill Emerson and his wife.
Enrollment figures released by State College show the school topping official predictions with a record number of 5,185 students on the campus; that is an increase of more than 800 over last fall's mark.
State College has received notice from Washington, D.C., that tentative allotment of $1,000,000 in federal funds has been made for the proposed addition to Kent Library; the federal funds will go with $2,164,000 in state appropriations for the library expansion.
Government architect A. Arthur Tucker left Cape Girardeau yesterday apparently set on building the new federal building/post office where Common Pleas Courthouse is now; postmaster Nat M. Snider said Tucker feels the park is a dream location for a large modern building; further, the postmaster said he hopes the postal department would go along with the project, saying no one will be badly hurt if the government should decide to locate the building in Courthouse Park.
E.G. Rudert, in a bid to solve the parking problem during the SEMO District Fair at the new park, suggests the fair board secure the land between the present southern edge of the park and Gordonville Road; the suggestion grows out of the numerous complaints over the parking of cars in the middle of the racing oval, obstructing the view of the races.
The Rev. J.C. Handy of Fulton, Missouri, is officially sent to Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau by Bishop Hendrix, who announces his list of appointments of pastors for the next year; it is also announced the Rev. G.A. McFarland of Senath, Missouri, will be sent to the South Cape Methodist church.
F.F. Braun, the Haarig and Broadway grocer, has the plans and specifications out for the construction of a fine, seven-room brick bungalow on South Lorimier Street; the building will be built on Braun's lot just south of the Lilly property.
