The monthlong centennial celebration at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) continues; at morning worship services, the book "First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ): A Centennial History 1890-1990" is dedicated; Hazel Sanders and Larry Easley compiled the book.

McDonald Concrete Co. has opened the way for future expansion, having purchased the Pepsi Cola building at 80 N. Broadview St.; the company will lease out part of the building and utilize the rest of it for its own use.

1965

The Cape Girardeau branch of the county collector's office is to be reopened as the result of a decision by the Cape Girardeau County Court to hire a deputy registration clerk to help staff the office; the office in Common Pleas Courthouse will reopen Monday morning and will remain open indefinitely.

Sgt. Benny R. Hinton will leave the Cape Girardeau Police Department tomorrow to enter the State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Rolla, Missouri; he has been on the city force since September 1961.

1940

The Rev. W.N. Ware is appointed pastor of Maple Avenue Methodist Church during the session of the St. Louis Conference of the church at Jefferson City, Missouri; Maple has been without a minister since the death early in the year of the Rev. J. Linn Haw; his widow has been serving as the church director.

Three Cape Girardeau boys started out Saturday on a small-scale hunting trip, but decided to spend the night away from home; having neglected to tell their families of their decision, a search was started early Sunday with the assistance of police and state troopers; the boys -- George Kester, 12, Allen O'Howell, 13, and Edwin Mulkey, 11 -- were found Sunday afternoon, tired from roughing it and pretty hungry.

1915

Missouri Gov. Elliott W. Major is the first man to be seen on the streets of Cape Girardeau for the big Democratic rally; a parade takes a big crowd out to the fairgrounds for a barbecue; Secretary W.G. McAdoo of President Wilson's cabinet, and son-in-law of the president, will speak at Courthouse Park in the evening.

A.R. Zoelsmann leaves in the evening for St. Louis, where he will spend several days buying groceries; he is having his place on Water Street enlarged and will keep a complete line of groceries for wholesale trade only.
