Cape Girardeau City Councilman Al Spradling III announced his bid for re-election to another four-year term yesterday; he and Lawrence Godfrey of Cape Girardeau were the only candidates to file election petitions Wednesday, the first day of filings.
A pilot project of Student Government at Southeast Missouri State University will provide students with evening child care on campus during the spring semester; the program is designed to serve parents who have night classes and need evening care for their children.
The County Court decides to go ahead with the purchase of equipment for an emergency civil-defense communications center in the Jackson courthouse; the court approves bids totaling $10,256 for equipment that includes radio units, a radio tower and an emergency generator.

The Cape Girardeau City Board of Health, in session at Mayor Hinkle Statler's office yesterday, decided to ask all parents in the city to have their children immunized against smallpox and diphtheria; figures submitted showed 952 pupils in the public schools haven't been immunized against diphtheria and 299 haven't been vaccinated against smallpox.
Just six inches short of flood stage, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is rolling on to a new Cape Girardeau crest, which port warden Lee L. Albert said will be reached at 32 feet or slightly higher by this weekend.

The Cape Girardeau City Council last night passed an ordinance ordering the condemnation of the property needed to open and extend Main Street between Independence and William streets.
