Thanksgiving Day. Seventy-five volunteers at the Salvation Army feed around 350 people at the annual Thanksgiving dinner; following their example, Mollie's, a Cape Girardeau restaurant, opens its doors and serves a free Thanksgiving buffet.

A Christmas tradition for 31 years, Hutson's Furniture in downtown Cape Girardeau unveils its annual Christmas display. This year, the window features a scale model of Silverton, Colorado, in the early 1900s. Store employees worked on the display nightly and on weekends for four weeks.

1966

School superintendent Charles E. House said central administrative offices of the Cape Girardeau School District are expected to be moved in about three weeks to a school-owned building at 61 N. Clark Ave. The offices now are in rented spaces on the second floor of a building in the 1100 block of Broadway, which the administration has occupied since August 1961.

City employees begin work to repair Fort D, which was damaged extensively last week by rock-tossing children. Every window in the fort was shattered and every door knocked down or damaged to an inoperable state. Until two weeks ago, Paul Richards and his family lived there rent-free as a deterrent to vandalism.

1941

Having met for nine hours Thursday with Frank J. Stranahan, owner of the Mississippi River traffic bridge here, about Cape Girardeau's proposed purchase of the property, the city's delegation returns home. Members said a written report of the conference will be issued shortly.

The highway between Cape Girardeau and Jackson is receiving its third facial treatment, classified by the State Highway Department as roadside development. Along with the thousands of bushes and trees already planted in the Eight-Mile Garden, hundreds more are being added, including evergreens, willows, sycamores, ash, hibiscus and redbuds. In February or March, a large number of native dogwood will be set.

1916

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Little of Cape Girardeau received word of the death of Russ Rhinehart of Pemiscot County. He was a member of Company B of Pemiscot County and was ambushed and shot by Mexican bandits on the border several days ago. His is the first casualty that has occurred among the members of Company B. His body will be sent back to Caruthersville, Missouri, for burial.

The Cape Girardeau High School football squad will travel to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on Thanksgiving Day to play its final game of the season. One of Cape's best players, Lorenzo Kinder, won't be going along, as he sustained injuries in a recent game against the Normal second team.
