Building of a new bridge on Highway 25 over the Diversion Channel is among the top state road projects slated for construction in Southeast Missouri next year; the $3.3 million bride project is one of eight major road projects scheduled for the region in 1991.

A Union Electric crew has erected a 25-foot cedar tree for the Salvation Army's annual Tree of Lights campaign in front of Boatmen's Bank, at the northwest corner of Broadway and Main Street in Cape Girardeau.

After hosting more than 1,500 visitors, the Missourian Art Exhibition closes after its annual two-day show; rain doesn't dampen the enthusiasm of the patrons, as they view 172 paintings by local artists displayed in the newspaper's offices; guest artist for the 19th exhibition is Jim Harmon of St. Louis.

Police raided the No Name Coffee House, 813 Broadway, yesterday and closed the establishment; the night spot's new owners were operating it without a city merchant's license; a merchant's license doesn't transfer from one person to another with the sale of property.

1940

Thanksgiving Day. The faithful gather at 7 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Church for the annual union Thanksgiving service, sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance; delivering the message is the Rev. Marvin C. Reichert, pastor of the English Lutheran Church.

The Passion Play, which had its beginnings in a humble Bavarian village in the 13th century, is presented for the first time in the evening at the Teachers College auditorium; Josef Meier, a descendant of the old family of Luenen who through the centuries has carried on the great tradition, portrays the Christ and leads a cast of 22 experienced, professional actors; the play will be given each afternoon and evening through Saturday.

Dr. J.H. Horstmann, editor of the Evangelical Herald, of St. Louis, speaks to a large audience at Centenary Methodist Church in the evening in behalf of the Laymen's Missionary Movement, which is extending over the country; delegates from all the churches in this community will take part in a great convention in St. Louis Dec. 1, 3 and 5; the purpose is to arouse the laymen to the religious importance of missionary work in all parts of the world.

Mrs. William Bryan departs for Dallas, Texas, to visit Dr. and Mrs. I.L. Holt for two weeks; her son, Billy, left two weeks ago for Detroit to take a job at an automobile factory; that leaves only Mrs. Bryan's daughter, Mrs. Meyers, still at the Cape.
