Once again, the Nell Holcomb School District is readying a search for a new superintendent. Superintendent Wayne C. Pressley has submitted his resignation, saying his departure is for personal reasons. His final day on the job will be June 30.
St. Mary Cathedral School is the latest school to cancel classes Dec. 3 and 4, the dates an earthquake is predicted, reversing an earlier decision to hold classes those days. Sister Jeanne Goessling, principal, said a survey of parents revealed 37 percent wouldn't send their children to school.
FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Maj. Louis C. Wagner Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Wagner of Jackson, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal for his service in Vietnam. He received the medals recently from Maj. Gen. Harry J. Lemley Jr., commandant of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth.
Edwin Ledure of Commerce, Missouri, specialist fourth class, is with the 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) Division, at least parts of which have been committed to the major battle being fought in the Ia Drang Valley in South Vietnam. Ledure is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Ledure of Commerce. He will end his second year in the Army next month.
Notification goes out from the county draft board to the first five men from Cape Girardeau County who will be inducted into military training under the Selective Service Act. Placed in the top classification after volunteering and meeting all qualifications were John W. Cracraft Jr., Harold M. Reisenbichler, Harry D. Chauvin, Robert C. Henson and Cecil F. Isaac. They will be inducted into service Nov. 29 at Jefferson Barracks.
The Erlbacher Foundry & Machine Co. is going forward with plans for a project including beautification of the elevated point of Civil War Fort A at the east end of Bellevue Street and the erection of a ship-to-shore radio telephone aerial shaft there. The city is cooperating with the work.
Both generators at the street-car company's power house having burned out, the trolleys are sitting idle; however, A.M. Tinsley has induced several automobile owners to put their vehicles into service, and they are making regular trips over the same route as the street cars, picking up passengers along the way.
Mrs. Billy Wood, who owns and operates the three-story brick building across the street from the city police headquarters on Independence Street, was found guilty yesterday of "conducting an undesirable place."
