1990

Cape Girardeau police must direct long lines of traffic through the congested William Street and South Kingshighway intersection for about an hour in the morning after a momentary power surge blows out a fuse in the temporary traffic signal box at the intersection; the power surge is caused when a crane working on a construction project at the site touches an overhead power line.

The Cape Girardeau City Council votes unanimously to authorize an 8.4-percent salary increase for city manager J. Ronald Fischer; his new salary, effective July 1, will be $54,000.

1965

Seniors of two local high schools will receive diplomas tomorrow; at College High, Robert R. Hill will address 31 seniors; 76 seniors accept their diplomas from Bishop Ignatius J. Strecker at Notre Dame High School; commencement exercises at Jackson High School were Friday night, while Cape Girardeau Central's will be Thursday.

About 20 percent of the needed minimum of 465 water users have signed agreements to take water from the Cape County Public Water Supply District No. 1; that's the last major hurdle before realization of a public water system for the Cape and Perry County area.

1940

With thousands of people required to man hoes along the rows of cotton fields in Southeast Missouri, farmers trying to secure needed workers are told the WPA has issued an order that WPA workers must accept the field work when it is offered to them.

HAYTI, Mo. -- The first family in the United States to occupy one of the Farm Security Administration's new "scattered labor" project dwellings moves into the structure, nine miles southwest of Hayti; the $499, four-room house is home to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wood and five of their six children.

1915

At a recent meeting of property owners along Fornfelt's Main Street, it was decided to macadamize the street instead of concreting it; it is somewhat cheaper, as streetcar tracks may be laid along the street at some point in the future or a water system may be installed.

A special Frisco train has been arranged to carry the Capahas and a hundred or so fans to Sikeston, Missouri, tomorrow to see the game between the two teams, which last year were the greatest rivals in the league; the train will leave here at 12:30 p.m., stopping at Chaffee, Brooks Junction, Oran and McMullin, Missouri, to pick up baseball fans along the way.
