CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Despite a recent upswing in patient admissions, years of financial struggle have forced the North Scott Medical Center in Chaffee to close its doors. The center's five-member board of directors announced yesterday the center no longer will treat people on an in-patient basis. An outpatient clinic, MedNow, opened last month and will continue to operate in one wing of the hospital.
JEFFERSON CITY -- Ten days of intense negotiations and compromise bore fruit Friday, when a tax and reform package for education was approved in the final two hours of the Missouri General Assembly's 1991 session. The $385 million package represented an attempt by the two houses and Gov. John Ashcroft to reach a middle ground on a tax plan to send to voters.
Two nurses -- Luella Trickey and Mrs. Robert Wood -- who have spent more than the majority of their nursing careers in the obstetrics division of Saint Francis Hospital express sadness about the fact the ward will be closed at midnight Monday. The main reason for the closing is for additional bed space. The third-floor ward will be converted to intensive-care and recovery-room use.
"Old loyalties are no longer binding," Charles Brown, former Springfield, Missouri, congressman, tells a crowd of about 300 attending the Byrd Township Democratic barbecue at Jackson. "Our young people want candidates who can stand up and say what they believe in," Brown says.
Thomas D. Williams, who will be ordained into the active ministry May 28, and who graduated last week from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Mount Airy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has accepted the pastorate of the First English Lutheran Church here. He will be installed as pastor June 15.
Under the director of Clem S. Fisher, professional church decorator of St. Louis, preparations are being made for the complete redecoration of Christ Evangelical Church, the first since the building was erected 11 years ago. In addition to the main church auditorium, which will receive attention first, 20 other rooms are to be included in the thorough renovation project.
The Rev. Frank Y. Campbell, until a few weeks ago pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau, has been called by the First Baptist Church of Carthage, Missouri. He has accepted the call after considering it for a long time.
Two well-known former Cape Girardeau girls will graduate next week from the Morse School in St. Louis: Mary Jane Albert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Albert of St. Louis, and Ruth Kelso, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.R. Kelso.
