The congregation of St. John's Lutheran Church at Pocahontas is having a year-long observance of the 125th anniversary of the church; St. John's, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, was founded in 1868 by a group of Austrian Lutherans; the first church building was dedicated in 1870.
William and Morgan Oak streets are now at the top of the priority list for improvement under the State Highway Department's Urban Highway Plan for Cape Girardeau; the widening of Broadway had held first place, but was removed by the highway department when a large number of Girardeans opposed the project.
The first primary election race on the Republican ticket has developed with the filing of W.K. Dillon of Cape Girardeau for the nomination for second district associate county court judge; Dillon will be facing Louis W. Bahn in the primary battle, with the winner taking on incumbent Judge Walter H. Ford, Democrat, in November, if he wins in August.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl A. Davis of Cape Girardeau received a telegram yesterday informing them their son, John O. Davis, 27, a technician fourth class, is missing in action in North Africa; he has been missing since Feb. 28.
Gusta Schoen, whose farm is on Highway 25 about 10 miles north of Jackson, is in Southeast Hospital as the result of an accident yesterday as she was helping her son, Leon, saw wood; they were operating a tractor-driven saw rig, when the woman stumbled and fell against the moving blade; a deep wound was cut in her right hip.
Albert Coyle, a member of the second contingent of drafted men to leave Cape Girardeau in September 1917, has returned home, having secured his discharge; he wears two service stripes on his sleeve, indicating he was in service abroad for 12 months; Coyle was a member of the First Gas Regiment of the regular Army.
Articles of association for the incorporation of the Cape Mill Manufacturing Co., have been filed for record in the recorder's office in Jackson; stock in the company are in the hands of William E. Leming, M.E. Leming, M.E. Leming Jr., P.B. Leming, L.E. Comer, Charles Lamb and George A. Campbell of Commerce, Missouri.
