The Cape Girardeau City Council has directed the city staff to send a letter to the County Planning Commission opposing a proposed commercial development along Hopper Road west of the city limits; at the commission's Feb. 18 meeting, Mid-America Hotels proposed the commercial development for property on the northwest corner of the Hopper Road-Interstate 55 overpass.

Southeast Missouri schools in Chaffee, Oak Ridge, Sikeston and Dexter close for the day to allow teachers to attend a rally sponsored by the Missouri State Teachers Association at Jefferson City; the Day of Decision rally is aimed at convincing lawmakers of a need to appropriate more money for elementary and secondary education.

1966

The Rev. C.E. Fleshman of Cape Girardeau has designed more than 150 churches in the United States; Fleshman is now doing evangelical work and was pastor of the Church of the Nazarene here for 13 years.

The Rev. Clyde T. Gibbs, minister of education at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, will leave March 16 for Kansas City, Missouri, where he will be minister of education at the Wernall Road Baptist Church; Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs have lived in Cape Girardeau over five years.

1941

When, and if, the government razes Common Pleas Courthouse to clear the site for a new federal court building, the city hopes to salvage the materials; if it does, says city commissioner Raymond Beckman, the city may construct a community building in Fairground Park using the brick.

Herbert Mulkey of the Cape State Teachers College has been picked as forward on the All-Star MIAA Conference basketball team of the Associated Press; Mulkey was the conference third high scorer for the season with 116 points.

1916

The fixtures for the new Cape Exchange Bank are being installed, and it is probable everything will be in readiness for the opening of the institution some time next week; while Judge William B. Schaefer will head the new bank, a cashier has not yet been announced.

Fred Groves Motor Co. has secured the services of Jack McKibben, one of St. Louis' best automobile repair men; in addition, the company has hired a new salesman, John H. Patterson, who formerly represented the International Trunk Co. in this territory.
