Authorities believe frustrated vandals set a small fire near the front lobby area of the vacant Marquette Hotel early yesterday morning; the fire is the latest in a series of incidents that have occurred at the old hotel during the past three months; it was reported by a passerby at 4:47 a.m., who noticed smoke coming from the lobby.

Jerry Dement, 35, head football coach at Malden (Missouri) High School, has been named the head football coach at Cape Girardeau High School.

The Marquette Cement Co. dry process plant resumes operation with the recall of most of the workers who were laid off last October; returning to their jobs for shifts beginning this morning are 156 production and maintenance men; earlier, about 36 men had been recalled to prepare the facilities for the resumption of production.

Six registered jersey calves die early in the morning when fire destroys a small shed on the Joe Kirchdoerfer farm just west of Interstate 55 on Route K; the blaze, believed to have started from an oil stove, smothers the calves to death before they can be removed.

The fuel demand in Cape Girardeau, always up when the mercury is down, has been especially brisk the past few days; the first days of March have brought record calls for fuel, but dealers say they have almost kept up with the late-winter demands.

A prowler seen behind the back of the Eggimann Feed & Produce Co., 514 Independence St., shortly before midnight, flees when police are called; two shots are fired by Patrolman Pink Niswonger over the man's head as he disappears into the darkness.

The Good Hope Bakery, which had been operated by Fletcher and Fischer, was sold Saturday to the Wielpuetz Bakery, the entire stock having been moved immediately after the deal was closed.

First Lt. and Mrs. F.D. Rhodes and little son, John Glenn Rhodes, leave in the morning for Camp Pike at Little Rock, Arkansas, where they will make their home until the lieutenant receives orders to move elsewhere; in the event Rhodes is ordered abroad, his wife and son will return to Cape Girardeau to resume living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Glenn, 313 Independence St.
