The Cape Girardeau Fire Department's mechanic, Carrol A. Schaefer, retired yesterday with the distinction of having served longer than any other mechanic of the department since it was mechanized in 1916; Schaefer, 63, has been the department's mechanic for 27 of the 33 years he has been on the force.

Construction is underway on three new drive-up lanes at Boatmen's Bank's downtown facility, 100 Broadway.

1966

Pupils from South Pemiscot High School at Steele, Missouri, in the senior division and Kenneth (Missouri) Junior High School in the junior division sweep the major share of first-place honors for exhibits on display in Houck Field House at the 10th annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair; the fair is co-sponsored by the Southeast Missourian newspaper and State College.

Sgt. Glenn W. Lampley of Cape Girardeau is one of five veterans of the State Highway Patrol who will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant on Friday; Lampley has been a member of the patrol since 1935, when he joined the agency during his senior year in college; when Lampley assumes his duties of lieutenant, he will work out of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, either in an administrative or enforcement capacity.

1941

William Hall Preston of Nashville, Tennessee, student secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention, is guest speaker in the evening at First Baptist Church; Preston explains the plan for the annual student trek to the Baptist summer assembly at Ridgecrest, North Carolina.

A recent, incomplete church census conducted under the guidance of Adj. Elof Anderson of the Salvation Army, listed 7,471 people; 2,415 families were contacted by workers of the cooperating churches; roughly 1,500 cards still need to be examined; thus far, however, the census shows the largest church memberships are held by Centenary Methodist Church and First Baptist Church.

1916

Mrs. Caroline Meyer, Cape Girardeau County's oldest resident, dies at the home of her son, George Meyer Sr., on the Perryville Road at the age of 96 years, 7 months and 11 days; she was born in Brunswick, Germany, and emigrated to this country with her husband, landing at the Cape Girardeau wharf in 1847.

Al Jaynes and other Cape Girardeau men who watch river conditions closely say they believe the river will reach a stage of 30 feet here by Saturday; the river began rising Tuesday night and today is at 25 feet.
