Southeast Missouri State University Provost Leslie Cochran has been named president of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio; the university's nine-member Board of Trustees unanimously selected the 52-year-old Cochran during a 50-minute closed-door meeting Monday night.
The U.S. Attorney's satellite office at Cape Girardeau announced yesterday that a federal grand jury for Southeast Missouri has formed and has returned its first indictment; that indictment involves a Dunklin County case in which authorities discovered in November a working methamphetamine laboratory described as the second largest ever found in the central United States.
Courtroom furniture from the former post office-federal building has been taken to Common Pleas Court, where it will be put to use; included are chairs, tables and courtroom benches, which formerly were used in Federal District Court; the benches are already in use, while the old Common Pleas benches are stacked in the back of the courtroom.
Establishment of a comprehensive pilot-training program leading to a "College of the Air" as a future important segment of the Cape Girardeau business community is announced by Cape Central Airways, operators of the municipal airport; the plan involves all phases of pilot training and is designed to equip fliers for the most sophisticated fields in aviation, including commercial airline operations.
With bids ranging up to $525 for a bull, the annual sale of the Missouri Shorthorn Breeders Association at the Arena Building yesterday was said by leading cattlemen of the state to be a general success; nearly 50 head were sold in rapid order by auctioneer Jack E. Halsey of Des Moines, Iowa; the annual association show was held Tuesday morning, and Duke of Commodore, owned by Ed H. Wolter of Chillicothe, Missouri, a 2 1/2-year-old bull, was named grand champion.
The interior of the American White Cross Laboratories, 1 College St., is damaged by a fire in the afternoon; while the blaze doesn't spread far, smoke and water do considerable damage to the equipment and cotton being processed; heavy damage was done by fire in the plant on Jan. 24, and some loss was suffered in another fire in 1941.
Representatives of the Salvation Army from St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois, yesterday conducted a number of open-air meetings in Cape Girardeau; today, they speak at a number of the Protestant churches in town, including the Presbyterian, German Methodist, Centenary Methodist and Christian churches.
Special services are held at St. Mary's Catholic Church and Christ Episcopal Church, with visiting prelates conducting the services; St. Mary's is holding two days of special devotions, with the Rev. Joseph Hoelting of St. Louis, apostolic missionary, in charge; the Right Rev. Frederick Foote Johnson, coadjutor bishop of Missouri, preaches at Christ Church and administers the rite of confirmation to a class of seven.
