SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Southeast Missouri State University lost its bid for an NCAA Division II basketball title during the Elite Eight Tournament yesterday; Kentucky Wesleyan's Vincent Mitchell sank a 3-point shot that enabled the Panthers to fight their way out of the jaws of defeat and post a 91-90 overtime victory over the Indians.

Almost $4,000 damage was done to two cars and a building at the northwest corner of Broadway and Frederick Street late yesterday afternoon; the force of the collision drove one of the cars into the building, which is owned by William C. Hartung and Mrs. Clara Huebel.

Sub-freezing temperatures accompanied by freezing drizzle maintains its hold on the Cape Girardeau area in arrogant contradiction of the calendar; Missouri Utilities Co. and telephone company maintenance personnel are keeping a close watch on icing conditions on power and telephone lines.

As a definite forward step in the move to build the Clearwater flood-control reservoir dam on Black River near Piedmont, Missouri, two land-condemnation suits are filed by the government in Federal Court here; the dam will serve a purpose similar to that of the Wappappello Dam on the St. Francis River south of Greenville, Missouri.

Jess Gangle, owner of the Hillcrest Club on U.S. 61, has purchased the Villa, a night club on Highway 3, north of McClure, Illinois; the purchase was made from Joe Meroney of Herrin, Illinois.

1915

It is reported that efforts are being made to reorganize the defunct Southeast Missouri Fair circuit, and that several county fairs in the lower counties will be brought into the association, with perhaps two fairs in Arkansas added; the fair at Sikeston, Missouri, will open the circuit on Sept. 21 through 24; Cape Girardeau's fair will follow the next week.

Dr. Henry Breide, the veterinary surgeon, learns from his son, Herbert Breide, that the young man will leave Jefferson Barracks tomorrow for Washington, D.C., where he will enter the engineering corps of the Army.
