The Cape Girardeau City Council is expected to choose Monday from among four lawyers in hiring an interim municipal judge; the candidates are Marshall Shain, John P. Heisserer, Craig M. Billmeyer and J. Patrick O'Loughlin.

A mechanical breakdown at the sewage disposal plant in south Cape Girardeau has forced a stoppage of the operation pending the replacement of parts. Tom Sides, the plant superintendent, says the plant has been out of operation for two weeks and that sewage is being bypassed directly to the Mississippi River with the permission of the State Water Pollution Board.
SIKESTON, Mo. -- A federal grant of more than $1 million to establish a training program for 200 low-income adults and 100 youths with poor educational qualifications has been awarded the Sikeston Public Schools.
Proposed installation of temporary lights to be used for softball games at Fairground Park would be opposed by some community leaders in Cape Girardeau, and at the same time, it was suggested that instead, permanent floodlights should be installed on the field east of the Arena Building at the new city park on U.S. 61. The present work at the new park doesn't include installation of floodlights for the field inside the race track.
The materials in a dwelling at 710 Broadway, owned by Chris Bauer and damaged by fire Feb. 24, have been sold to Rudy Kirchhoff, who is tearing the building down. Bauer says he probably will erect a business building on the lot but hasn't made definite plans.
A fire starts in the office of Dr. R.P. Dalton at noon, at the rear of his drug store at the corner of Main Street and Broadway. Not a great deal of damage is done by the fire, but loss from water and smoke is considerable. Firefighters have a hard time finding the flames, as the smoke is so dense.
An election at Illmo to determine whether the municipal government should be changed from that of a village to that of a fourth-class city carries 103 to 8. A mayor will be elected at the regular spring election, along with councilmen from each of the three wards.
