CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Having struggled with finding a solution to the city's wastewater treatment woes, the Chaffee City Council voted last night to deepen the final cell in the city's four-cell sewage lagoon; it is the cheapest of five solutions considered, but will still cost an estimated $150,000.
Following months of planning, Cape Girardeau's two-day Riverfest kicks off in the evening with the second annual River City Riverfest Barbecue Classic, an air show over the river, the eighth annual Riverfest Run and country band Gray Ghost on the main entertainment stage.
The Rev. Raymond W. Kunkel, associate pastor at St. Mary Cathedral here since October 1962, has been raised to the position of pastor by Bishop Ignatius J. Strecker of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese; Kunkel will assume his new pastorate June 15 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Piedmont, Missouri.
Three patrolmen on the Cape Girardeau police force have been promoted to the rank of sergeant: William G. Wilson, Robert L. Stallings and Lon Buie; the promotions were effective as of June 1, for pay purposes, but their new assignments won't be effective until June 15, when shifts change.
Farmers and Merchants Bank officials report to police they have accumulated two counterfeit $1 bills, which they say were included in deposits from two local beer taverns; it is believed the bogus bills came out of Chicago.
The Cape Girardeau City Council has leased a service station on U.S. 61, on a part of the new city park, to the Sinclair Refining Co. and agent K.A. Head; the same company has had the station under lease, and Ted Daugherty is manager; the lease is for one year.
Neither the plans to vote a $40,000 nor a $60,000 bond issue for the purchase of the fairgrounds and other park purposes was adopted by the Cape Girardeau City Council at its meeting last night; council members were split in their support for the plans, and the matter appears to be dead for now.
Theodore Kippenberg of St. Louis and William McClatchey of Cape Girardeau have leased the corner room of the Idan-Ha building at Broadway and Fountain Street and will open an ice-cream parlor and candy kitchen there in the near future.
