The confirmation Tuesday by the Senate of Sheriff John C. Crites' appointment as Jackson postmaster has heightened interest in the question of his replacement, particularly on the part of those who would like to become sheriff.

Action to start planning for development of Klaus Park for dedication this fall was begun last night in a meeting of the Cape County Parks and Recreation Board with the County Court; Conservation Commission field services agent Al Hoskin agreed to work with Carl Penzel and George Penzel to lay out a general plan for development of the park and to report back in two weeks.

1941

Bearing down with renewed intensity, the heat wave still has Cape Girardeau and district in its grip after a stifling weekend that saw the mercury bound up to 98 degrees yesterday; the temperature was 90 degrees at noon today, with no hint of rain or cooler weather to bring any immediate relief.

The County Court sets Aug. 11 as the date for a public hearing on the proposed $65,000 bond issue, funds from which would purchase the site and provide the sponsor's share in development of the proposed airport near Dutchtown, a WPA project; the hearing is required by state law to air approving and opposing views.

1916

The Loos Brothers sawmill, in the south end of Jackson, is damaged to the extent of $10,000 by fire in the afternoon; hard work by the fire-fighting department saves the mill from being completely destroyed.

Manning Kimmel leaves on the Gulf train in the afternoon for Scott County to purchase a rail car load of watermelons; so far this season, no home-grown watermelons have been placed on the market in Cape Girardeau, and it is believed a car load will last no longer than a July frost.
