MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- A 1-cent sales-tax hike to fund a recreational lake in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties would make the combined county, state and city sales-tax rate collected in Bollinger County the highest in the state: 6.225 cents on $1; the county already has an above average unemployment rate of 6.8 percent and is among the lowest in income per capita in Missouri.
In a move paralleling the National Jaycees organization, the Cape Girardeau Jaycees have officially changed the name of the organization to the Cape Girardeau Junior Chamber of Commerce; the new name matches the original one, which was changed during the early 1960s to the Jaycees.
The Rev. Harry C. Schlitt celebrates his first Solemn High Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in the afternoon; preaching at the Mass is Bishop Marion F. Forst of the Dodge City, Kansas, Diocese; Forst served as pastor of St. Mary's from 1949-1960; Schlitt, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Schlitt of Cape Girardeau, was ordained Dec. 16, 1964, in Rome.
St. Mark Lutheran Mission is the name which has been chosen for the new congregation of the Lutheran Church in America here; the congregation is being organized by the Rev. Max D. Sullivan, a native of Illinois, who was ordained last month.
There is growing opposition among residents here to the city's offer to trade a portion of Courthouse Park to the federal government for the construction of a new federal building; use of the site would mean the demolition of historic Common Pleas Courthouse.
Loss estimated at $4,000 is caused by fire which guts the Hood Grocery on Perry Avenue at 2 a.m.; the blaze, of undetermined origin, breaks out in the front half of the one-story frame building; firefighters can't extinguish the fire until the entire stock is ruined and all but the rear portion of the building is razed.
The Rev. Dr. M.S. Ryan, C.M., president of Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis and formerly connected with St. Vincent's College here, will attend the consecration of the Rev. Dr. Joseph S. Glass, C.M., as bishop of Salt Lake City; Glass and Ryan were students together in Rome; Glass will be the only member of the Vincentian order who is a bishop in this country.
The Cotton Belt Railroad plans to build three more side tracks, each a mile long, in the yards at Delta; the trains on the Cotton Belt are so long that lots of room is required to pass each other.
