While three years ago, most people hadn't heard of Lyme disease, physicians and the public in Southeast Missouri have become increasingly aware of the disease and its symptoms; in 1989, 88 of the 105 confirmed cases of Lyme disease originated in 11 Southeast Missouri counties with Cape Girardeau County leading the way with 35 cases.

Once again the city council is mired in debate over a downtown exit from the planned Highway 74; a split council voted July 2 to designate Lorimier Street as the downtown corridor from the bridge route; but proponents of a Fountain Street exit stir the controversy once more by presenting an engineer's cost estimate of the two routes, which refutes earlier city staff estimates.

1965

Union workers have accepted a tentative offer from Florsheim Shoe Co. to set up operations at the International Shoe Co. plant here; the final decision whether to locate here now rests with Florsheim and International Shoe management.

Kenneth Saunders, founder of the Church of Judas, is making a cross-country trek, hoping to awaken Christians to their responsibilities; the British citizen has walked from New York City to Los Angeles, and, thus far, from Memphis to Cape Girardeau.

1940

BENTON, Mo. -- Dr. U.P. Haw, 67, a prominent physician in this community, is allegedly shot and instantly killed by a 45-year-old unemployed laborer; the shooting occurs in the City Drug Store, where Haw had gone from his home across the street to arrange his day's activities.

The city of Cape Girardeau files with the post office department its proposal to trade a major portion of Courthouse Park, including the historic courthouse, to the government for the present Federal Building at Broadway and Fountain Street.

1915

Members of the Retail Merchants' Association have decided the annual outing will again be held on a boat; a trip will be made to Commerce, Missouri, some afternoon in August.

William Shivelbine goes to Illmo in the morning and catches the Cotton Belt train for St. Louis, where he will spend a few days buying fall goods for his men's furnishings store; he had intended to go to St Louis on the early Frisco train, but missed the train by about two hours owing to good sleeping.
