The Rev. W.W. Pitts, pastor of Second Baptist Church since 1962, is honored at fourth anniversary services; churches from Cape Girardeau and Jackson take part in the observance.

Hoping to beat the heat, thousands of people descend on Trail of Tears State Park; more than 5,500 people visited the park yesterday and today as temperatures hit the 100-degree mark; Lake Boutin is a popular destination in the park for swimmers and sunbathers.

1941

Members of the Cape Girardeau City Council have agreed to take the Frisco franchise-easement snarl to Federal Court for a solution, as negotiations have moved slowly since the question was formally taken up last month; the city proposes to file a petition in U.S. Federal Court to force a settlement over Frisco's use of Cape Girardeau streets and of city-owned, non-street property through town.

As a cooperative project between the State Department of Education and the WPA, an aircraft sheet-metal class, using portable equipment, will be established here, probably in late August; it will be a link in the national defense training program.

1916

Trainmen coming in from Pemiscot and Dunklin counties report the schools in those counties opened today; classes will run until October, when they will shut down for two months for cotton picking; classes then will resume.

Dr. and Mrs. R.E. Cunningham give an evening outing in honor of their guest, Ella Mundy Ramey; the girls and boys gather at the Cunningham home around 6 p.m., and then motor to Burfordville, where they spend the evening and enjoy a picnic supper.
