Construction funds for Cape Girardeau's proposed new federal building have been included in President Lyndon Johnson's budget submitted to Congress; the amount requested in the budget is $1,399,000; the government plans to construct a federal building to house the U.S. Court and other federal offices on the site of the old post office at Broadway and Fountain Street.

With American forces in South Vietnam are Army Pfc. Clyde W. Huff Jr. and Marine Lance Cpl. Troy T. Haupt Jr., both of Cape Girardeau County; Huff is a helicopter crew chief with the First Cavalry Division, which has been in action in Vietnam since September; Haupt is serving in the Hue Phu Bat sector with an infantry regiment of the Third Marine Division.

1941

A $10,309 National Youth Administration employment project, which will be supplement from time to time with additional federal funds, will begin here next week; the new program, the building of a short-wave radio sending and receiving station to tie in with a nation-wide network for national defense, has been projected for some time, but lack of suitable housing facilities has held it in abeyance.

Awaiting only a break in the weather, members of the Springdale Bird Sanctuary board are ready to begin construction of a pond at the sanctuary to attract waterfowl; the construction will be under the supervision of Dennis M. Scivally, engineer for the Cape Special Road District, and Ralph G. Ranney, district conservation supervisor.

1916

Mike Delurey, the man who received a badly injured hip in a fall from a beer wagon last Wednesday and who was permitted to lie uncared for in a damp, cold cellar until Thursday night when the president of the Provident Association ordered him moved to the hospital, is resting easily in a nice, clean bed; two doctors and the nurses treated what could have been crippling injuries.

Henry Sanders and Clarence Noenninger have leased the Orpheum Theater in Haarig from Herman Bock; the latter has been running house for several months.
