Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were injured yesterday when a Jackson R-2 school bus and a car collided head-on on Route OO five miles west of Gordonville; 12 students, ranging from elementary to high-school age, were aboard the bus when the accident occurred at 4:05 p.m.

A combination of low voter turnout and greater-than-expected opposition led to the narrow defeat Tuesday of a proposal to annex 345 acres of land into the city of Jackson; because it has been defeated twice, the proposal can't be resubmitted to voters for at least two years; the land in question extends northeastward from Jackson along East Jackson Boulevard and Bainbridge Road, toward Interstate 55.

The Rev. James V. Holm is the new pastor of West Side Church of God; prior to coming to Cape Girardeau, Holm held a pastorate at Danville, Illinois, where he also served as secretary of the Danville Ministerial Alliance and as finance chairman of the Greater Danville Association of Churches.

LOS ANGELES -- The Rev. John M. Lavelle, C.M., 81 years old, dies at a hospital here after a long illness; he was a teacher at St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau 14 years, transferring from there to Los Angeles in 1965 because of illness.

Gratitude to a country and community which have taken them in has led three Cape Girardeau refugees from Germany to apply for enlistment in Co. F, 6th Missouri Infantry, Reserve Military Force; they are Alfred Eisemann, a resident of Dresden until 21 months ago, when he escaped Germany with his sister; Martin Deutsch, who lived in Berlin, and Harvey Mann, whose home in Germany was Frankfort; all are registered for the draft, but because the aren't citizens, they won't be allowed to serve even when their numbers are called.

The SEMO District Fair Board has instructed fair manager H.V. Beal to request the Cape Special Road District Commission's assistance in constructing an outlet from the park to Highway 61 along the old Cape Girardeau & Northern Railroad right-of-way on the south side of the park.

1916

Having accepted an invitation from the pulpit committee of the Baptist Church, the Rev. D.K. Foster of Bloomfield, Missouri, preaches at worship services there; other ministers will likely follow, as the congregation seeks to find someone to take over the pastorate.

A special committee composed of Will Bergmann, Fred Groves and Leon Bahn meets in the afternoon to consider the scheme of installing a swimming pool, gymnasium and bowling alley in the basement of the Elks Club on Themis Street.
