Cape Girardeau lawyer John Oliver has been elected vice chairman of the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission. Oliver said his position means he will preside at any meeting chairman Harry Morley of Chesterfield, Missouri, is unable to attend.

Nancy McGrew, a reading teacher in Chaffee, Missouri, has been named 1991 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Association of Rural Educators.

1967

For the first time this winter, the Capaha Park lagoon is frozen solidly enough to support ice-skaters; many enjoy an afternoon gliding over the frozen surface.

A Biblical novel by Jean Bell Mosley of Cape Girardeau -- "The Crosses at Zarin" -- has been accepted for publication by Boardman Press, a Baptist publishing house in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition, she has received word Reader's Digest will publish one of her short stories, "Ingrate or Insight."

1942

Rupert C. Webb, 25, a son of Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Webb of near Millersville, lost his life in the sinking of the United States naval supply ship the Pollux, which with the destroyer Truxton went down off the coast of Newfoundland. Webb was a storekeeper third class aboard the Pollux, to which he had been attached about six months.

Cape Girardeau County selectees, after March 1, will be inducted into the Army the same day they are given their physical examinations at Jefferson Barracks. The local board will continue to fill its schedule of those taking pre-induction examinations this month, but has canceled the exams for 90 men who were to have taken it in March.

1917

Representatives of the Knights and Ladies of Security make a walking inspection of the St. Vincent College or Cape Rock property north of the city and declare it is the ideal site for the construction of the national Knights and Ladies of Security Home.

Will Hirsch has completed filling out his ticket for the various city offices: Hirsch, mayor; George H. Meyer, city collector; T.P. Fristoe, police judge; Joe H. Price, marshal; John I. Sample, city attorney; J.M. Shy, assessor; Martin Bender, treasurer; C.E. Schuchert, councilman first ward; G.W. Schack, councilman second ward; W.T. Ruff, councilman third ward; and J.E. Miller, councilman fourth ward. It is reported two of these candidates also will appear on the F.A. Kage ticket.
