Ten engineering firms have submitted statements of qualifications to the Cape Girardeau County Commission to provide engineering services for a 7,700-acre recreational lake being considered in Cape and Bollionger counties; the proposals will be referred to the lake committee and the county's attorney, Larry Ferrell, for review and a recommendation.

Re-Emergents -- a Southeast Missouri State University organization catering to non-traditional, mostly older students -- has planted a redbud tree on campus to replace the "gum tree" that was felled by vandals last October.

1965

The State College Board of Regents has set March 31 as the date to open bids for the construction of two 12-story domitories and a companion dining and social center; the new dorm complex will be ere4cted in the "Home of the Birds," southeast of the Magill Hall of Science; in addition, the board has hired St. Louis architectural firm Pierce and Pierce to design the planned addition to Kent Library.

A group of area artists, professional and amateur, gathered in the upstairs room of a building at 119 Themis St., last night to paint; this was the first official meeting held by a new organization: the Creative Arts Guild, Inc.

The final session of The Missourian's 14th annual Cooking School draws an overflow crowd to the Broadway Theater; Mrs. George M. Thurn, the lecturer, witgh her assistant, Mrs. Betty Paxson, bring to a close one of the largest cooking schools staged by the newspaper; the theater is packed for the final session,, many women standing throughout the program.

Roy Smith has taken out a petition as a candidate for city commissioner in his first venture for a public office; Smith formerly was a member of the fire department, worked at the cement plant and is now a salesman for the Central Fire Hose Co. of St. Louis.

1915

Boats are nearly setting a record this year for coming out of winter quarters early; the St. HJames passed down the river Feb. 17 on its way to Memphis, in an attempt to get the start of its rivals, the Lee liners; normally, there is ice on the river at this time of the year.

Jacob Leible Jr., has acquried the farm of the late Frank Messmer Sr., near Kelso, Missouri; the farm constists of 129 acres, for which Leible paid $8,700, or about $67.45 per acre.
