A plan to ban smoking at all Cape Girardeau public schools by the fall of 1991 has been approved by the Cape Girardeau Board of Education; the ban will begin this fall, when students will not be allowed to smoke at school; the smoking cage at Central High School, where students are now allowed to smoke, will be eliminated; the second phase of the policy calls for a ban on smoking by all the staff and anyone else starting in fall 1991.

Kindergarten classes will be smaller next year at Cape Girardeau Public Schools; the school board has lowered the maximum number of students to be allowed in a kindergarten class from 30 to 25.

1965

The local Knights of Columbus group holds its fourth annual awards night; Edward J. Bauerle and A.W. Zimmer Jr., are recognized as 50-year members; 25-year members honored are Ira F. Brice and Anton J. Winkler, both of Jackson; Edward L. Welter of Kelso, Missouri, and Glenn J. Lewis and Joseph H. Quatmann of Cape Girardeau; honorary life members are Ben F. Speak of Scott City and Joseph Culotta of Cape Girardeau.

Construction is set to begin on a new home for Elks Lodge 639 on a tract of land west of North Kingshighway; the site was purchased from Denzil Slinkard and lies south of the Acme Electric Co. buildings.

1940

Manning P. Greer, a safety engineer for the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co., has been elected president of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

Approach of the date, April 2, for the start of the 1940 federal census has brought a flood of applications from persons who want jobs as census enumerators to the office of W.G. Wicker, census supervisor for the 10th Congressional District; so far, about 60 applications have been received for jobs in Cape Girardeau County; between 400 and 500 applications are on hand for all the counties in the district.

1915

Jackson is in for three or four weeks of grilling at the hands of evangelist Steve Burke; Burke, one of the great revivalists of the country, begins his meeting in the morning at McKendree Methodist Church; a tremendous choir of singers from all Protestant denominations has been organized by Herbert C. Tovey; the choir leader is A.B. Hobbs.

The electric car of Mrs. J.H. Himmelberger was pretty smashed up last evening, when it rolled from its parking place at 314 N. Lorimier St., and tumbled over the embankment into the hollow below, a distance of 30 feet.
