Area relief organizations have pooled their efforts to create a "grocery store" where people don't need money to take home plenty of food for their families; in the old IGA building at 80 Plaza Way, aisle after makeshift aisle stands stocked with food, clothing and cleaning supplies to be distributed to flood victims.
Thirty young people from Cape Girardeau are preparing to depart tomorrow for Denver, Colorado, where they will attend World Youth Day and see Pope John Paul II; the culmination of the week-long event is an all-night vigil Friday; the pope will celebrate Mass the next morning with all the attendees.
Absentee ballots failed to affect the consolidation of Illmo and Scott City, but the possibility of contesting Tuesday's election has been raised; in the special election, Illmo defeated the proposal by 14 votes, while Scott City approved the merger; the 37 absentees from Illmo served to widen the margin of defeat, as the ballots were against the issue, 25 to 12.
There may shortly be two vacancies on the Cape Girardeau City Council; one empty post was assured yesterday with the appointment of Councilman J. Ronald Fischer as county judge of the 2nd District; another could occur within a few months should Mayor A. Muegge.
Relatives of Ethel Grimes and Julia Finney in Cape Girardeau say these young nurses are now at work in hospitals in France; they have been assigned to the surgical unit of Red Cross nurses and are likely serving in base hospitals.
Another summer term of the Southeast Missouri Normal School ended last night, when 150 young men and women received their certificates and diplomas for work completed; some of them graduated from the college course, some from the full teachers' course, others from the departments of elementary work and rural school work.
