CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A thunderstorm packing heavy rain and winds estimated at 50 to 60 miles per hour downed numerous trees in Chaffee early last night and caused power outages; there was also some minor tree damage reported in Scott City.
Voters in Scott City reject for the second time a half-cent increase in the city sales tax that would have funded street repairs; the measure fails by a margin of 57.3 percent.
The first three persons to receive master's degrees directly from State College in its 93-year history were given their distinctive hoods in commencement ceremonies last night; receiving hoods were Velma Kearbey of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; Mrs. Velma Marlin of Naylor, Missouri, and Paul Gene Stedman of Ferguson, Missouri.
Seasonal labor demands in the Cape Girardeau and Bootheel areas are beginning to taper off; the Sikeston, Missouri, office of the Division of Employment Security reports that the sweet corn harvest is complete and that available labor crews are leaving for other parts of the country; the Cape Girardeau office says demand for seasonal farm labor has dropped, especially in the past seven days.
Fifteen National Youth Administration workers are rushing work on the interior of the old Broadway School building in preparation for its occupancy by the district WPA office, to move here from Farmington, Missouri, as soon as the structure is ready; other workers are renovating the building's heating plant.
Due to a renewed outbreak of rabies among dogs in Fornfelt and Illmo, where a number of persons have been bitten in recent weeks, the two town councils met jointly last night and passed emergency ordinances calling upon all dog owners to have their pets vaccinated or keep them penned; at least 15 persons are receiving treatment against rabies, and others have finished the series.
The Cape Girardeau Capahas smother the Illmoites at the Fairgrounds in the third game of the second half of the baseball season, 12-1; five of the 12 runs are made in the first inning.
The Rev. J.L. Fisher of Keensberg, Illinois, speaks at the Christian Church, both in the morning and evening services, to a full attendance of the congregation; the members of the church board are highly impressed with Fisher, who comes highly recommended as a minister; the board is seriously considering accepting him as pastor of the church.
