Donald R. Chilton has resigned as president of First Exchange Corp., parent company of several Exchange banks, including Jackson Exchange Bank and First Exchange Bank of Cape Girardeau; Chilton has joined the family business, a vinyl and leather manufacturing firm headquartered in St. Louis.

A litter cleanup project started by the Derby Knights, a new Cape Girardeau car club, could spark establishment of a citywide "adopt a street" program; the Knights started picking up trash and litter on the sidewalks and parking lots along Broadway earlier this summer.

County Clerk Rusby C. Crites receives a letter from the State Tax Commission stating the 50 percent increase in motor vehicle assessment ordered for the county won't be rescinded; Crites is unsure whether the commission was reacting to a letter written by the County Board of Equalization protesting the hike in assessments or whether a group of private citizens petitioned the commission.

Using hand signals and two-way radios to communicate with crain operator Lloyd Swain of Chaffee, Missouri, the last piece of pre-cast siding is jockeyed into place on one of State College's new high-rise dormitories.

John Kohlfeld has been appointed by Mayor Hinkle Statler as night watchman in the Good Hope Street area, succeeding the late J.E. Crafton; a part of his salary, $30 monthly, is paid by the city; the remainder is underwritten by merchants of that part of town.

Two outdoor and outmoded buildings in Fairground Park, often referred to as the city's biggest disgrace, are torn down at the direction of Commissioner R.E. Beckman; erected many years ago, the buildings have been a menace for years; the plan is to start construction within a few days on two sets of bathrooms for use by the public in the east end of the swimming-pool dressing room.

1916

Louis Schultz has been advised by the secretary of the school board of Maryville, Missouri, he has been chosen as teacher of manual training and athletics in the high school there; he will tender his resignation to the Cape Girardeau School Board for action at the next meeting.

Robert Housan, an employee of a mill in the far north end of Cape Girardeau, is nursing a broken wrist, which he sustained Tuesday; while he was running a saw in the mill, a piece of timber got away from him and struck his wrist, breaking several of the small bones.
