Fall semester undergraduate enrollment is up slightly at Southeast Missouri State University, but total enrollment decreased; headcount enrollment declined by 95, but undergraduate enrollment increased by 71 and total full-time equivalent enrollment was up 44 over last fall's first-day enrollment; the headcount after the first day of classes Monday stood at 8,380.

The west column of the Fifth Division, moving from Fort Custer, Michigan, to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, for war games, motored through Cape Girardeau yesterday in a long caravan of equipment and troop carriers; hundreds of Girardeans lined the route to view the Army's "blitz buggies, or a 'jeep,' the highly maneuverable little auto."
Jackson Homecomers kicked off last night, with bandmaster LeRoy F. Mason and the municipal band providing the opening entertainment; the event is spread over more territory in the business district than usual and is particularly attractive to children, with rides and the Barnyard Jamboree.
C.D. Matthews of Sikeston, Missouri, the wizard of finance and the over-towering figure of Southeast Missouri's commercial life, is here on one of his frequent visits; just 10 years ago he was up for a call, and 25 years ago he came up on business; today, his son, Col. C.D. Matthew Jr., had business here, and prevailed upon his father to make the trip with him.
St. Vincent's Young Ladies Academy will open its school year Monday, with Mother Placide and the Sisters of Loretto in charge; St. Vincent's Parochial School for boys, also taught by the Loretto sisters, will open the same day; St. Mary's Grade School, which admits both boys and girls, is under the direction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and will open Monday as well; Trinity Lutheran School starts Sept. 5, and will be in charge of professor F.W. Niermann and his daughter, Rosa.
