To accommodate a steadily increasing number of female prisoners in recent years, the Cape Girardeau County Jail likely will be expanded; Sheriff Norman Copeland and Presiding Circuit Judge A.J. Seier have been discussing for some time the need for additional jail space for women prisoners with members of the County Commission.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- The Bollinger County Sheriff's Department Advisory Committee is calling for an increase in the number of deputies from two to three; members of the committee say they have been trying to persuade the county commissioners to hire another deputy for a month, but the request has been denied.

1966

William R. Smirl has moved his business, Bill's Pharmacy, to newly renovated quarters at 735 Broadway; the pharmacy had been located in a building just across Ellis Street.

Dottie Haupt of St. Louis takes nearly all the marbles at the third annual Pilot Proficiency Air Race held at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport; Haupt wins the race and is awarded the traveling trophy that is held each year by the winner; she also wins the best woman pilot trophy and the Cessna Aircraft trophy; her co-pilot is Milton Oaks, also of St. Louis; second place goes to Edward White and Ernie Chiles of Cape Girardeau.

1941

Cape Girardeau has its first glimpse of large-scale operations of the U.S. Army, when the entire west column of the Fifth Division, moving from Fort Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan, to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, for mass maneuvers and war games with other troops, passes through the city; there were 35 to 40 motorized advance units that passed through yesterday, and today's main body consists of 739 vehicles carrying nearly 9,000 soldiers.

Traffic on Highway 61 comes near being cut off early in the day, when a burning motor truck tumbles from the side of the diversion channel bridge four miles south of Cape Girardeau and sets fire to the span; the bridge is damaged, but members of the fire department pump water from booster tanks to bring the blaze under control before the timbered under-construction is too badly weakened.

1916

Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Hoskins and Dora Mohr of St. Louis drove down from St. Louis yesterday and are guests of Mayme Leyhe of North Lorimier Street; the party experienced some difficulty in making the trip because of the fierce storm which overtook them at Chester, Illinois.

A touching farewell service is held at the First Baptist Church in Jackson for the Rev. F.W. Carnett; during the two years and eight months he has had charge of the local church, 100 members have been added to the rolls.
