Six days of entertainment is in store for those attending the SEMO District Fair, Sept. 13 to 18; entertainment will include the Blue Grass shows, the Porter Wagoner Show and the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show.

Cape Girardeau County Court members discuss advertising for bids for a 140-foot radio tower, radio equipment and an emergency generator for a Civil Defense communications center; the estimated cost of $8,000 would be partly paid by the federal government.

1941

Edward W. Barenkamp resigns as Cape Girardeau police chief, after heading the department 13 months; Barenkamp will take a job Sept. 2 as a special police captain in St. Louis; the job is with the Western Cartridge Co., which will operate under the U.S. War Department, manufacturing ammunition.

The L.A. Tucker Truck Line lets a contract to F.W. Kurre for construction of a brick terminal building on Independence Street, just east of the Landgraf Lumber Co. plant, with the structure to cost between $7,000 and $8,000; the Tucker terminal and office will be transferred to the new location from the present quarters on Spanish Street.

1916

After viewing a rough pencil sketch of a proposed plan of beautification of Fairground Park, the Cape Girardeau City Council last night adopted the plan and ordered a landscaping gardening and engineering firm of St. Louis to perfect its proposal.

Parisian Dry Cleaning Co. has installed one of the most modern dry-cleaning machines on the market; it is known as the Mateen laundry, dry cleaning and garment dyeing machine, and is used by all the big establishments in the larger cities; it was necessary to have a concrete building constructed especially for this machine to meet the requirements of the insurance laws; manager of the company is Roy Schuck.
