Poshard voices concern at a press conference at John A. Logan College. His office has been inundated with calls from both sides of the issue.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- As many as 1,400 Southeast Missourians soon will be out of work as Brown Shoe Co. plans to close four facilities in Charleston, Bernie, Caruthersville and Fredericktown, Missouri. The company announced the closings yesterday as part of a restructuring plan to bring manufacturing capacity in line with a continued drop in sales.

Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Ivan E. McLain has been named by the Cape Girardeau County Republican Committee as the party's candidate for sheriff in the November general election. He will oppose the Democratic nominee, Sheriff Herbert F. Riehn, and any independent candidates who file for the office.

Supt. Charles E. House announces some administrative shuffling in Cape Girardeau public schools. Charles Clippard, principal at Franklin School, will move to the same position at the new Hawthorn School. Lloyd Gene Estes, who has been principal at Lorimier, will take Clippard's place at Franklin. Junior-high teacher Russell Ward will become principal at Lorimier.

1941

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Zion Methodist Church at Old Appleton, under the supervision of its pastor, the Rev. Roy A. Biesemeyer, holds all-day services. Various neighboring ministers take part in the services, and a basket dinner is held at noon.

Featured at the morning service at Centenary Methodist Church is a quartet composed of Harold Lane, Manley Limbaugh, Don Poe and Tim O'Connell. The four sing "God Is Love."

1916

W.G. Bartels has about completed moving his dry-goods stock from the Bergmann-Bartels store to the Walther building at the corner of Broadway and Frederick streets, at one time a picture-show house. Bartels and William Bergmann recently dissolved their partnership amicably.

The Meyer and Suedekum Hardware store is moving from the old location to its new building at 620 Good Hope St. The new building is one of the most complete business houses in the city, and the hardware store, when the new goods arrive, will be one of the largest and best in this part of the state.
