1993

The annual homecoming of Trinity Methodist Church and Cemetery Association, also known as The Little German Church, is held on the church grounds, three miles west of Delta on Route N; guest speaker is Larry Dowdy of Cape Girardeau, who is with the Little River Drainage District.

Waters from the "Flood of 1993" are receding slowly, but the record flood's aftermath is leaving behind some numbing statistics; millions of acres of crop land have been affected in Missouri, Iowa and Illinois; raging waters wiped out more than 1,900 levees in the Midwest; highways, railroad, businesses and homes along the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers have suffered damages up to $5 billion in Missouri and from $15 billion to $20 billion in the Midwest.

1968

A woman has entered the race for the open seat on the Cape Girardeau City Council, bringing the total number seeking the post back to five; Ruby M. Farrow joined Rufus B. Kluesner, Douglas M. Kitchen, Frederick Fielder and Roy Smith as candidates; Gerald L. Powers has withdrawn from the race.

"No relief in sight" is the watchword again in the Cape Girardeau area; a 97-degree reading yesterday matched the season's high, set two weeks ago, and there is little to indicate improvement today; the Cape Girardeau area has been sweltering in a prolonged heat wave, which has intensified in the last six days.

1943

The Rev. S. Frank Moss assumed his duties as the new pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Cape Girardeau; he comes here from Jonesboro, Arkansas, his first pastorate, which he served five years and led in the construction of a new, $15,000 brick church.

BENTON, Mo. -- The Rev. Charles H.A. Schmalle of West Alton, Missouri, has been named pastor of the St. Denis Catholic Church at Benton; he succeeds the Rev. Herman T. Macke, who a month ago was named pastor of the Guardian Angel Church at Oran, Missouri.

1918

Following a meeting Monday night at Egypt Mills by the congregation of the Lutheran church to act further in the matter of releasing the Rev. A.M. Lohmann, it was decided to call a meeting of the Lutheran ministers of Cape Girardeau County to act as intermediaries in settling the question of Lohmann accepting the call of the Trinity Church congregation in Cape Girardeau; Trinity has sent two calls to Lohmann, but the Egypt Mills congregation has refused to lease their minister.

Ralph Ranney, son of the late Judge Robert G. Ranney of the Common Pleas Court, is believed by relatives to be on the battle front in France fighting the Huns from the air; Ranney is a gunner in the aerial service.
