A large crowd turns out for the dedication of the Cape Girardeau Regional Service Center of the Missouri Department of Conservation at Cape Girardeau County Park North; about 200 people tour the new, $1.3 million building, which will serve as a regional office and visitor center for the conservation department.

Officials with Industrial Fuels and Resources Inc. of Scott City say they plan to appeal a Department of Natural Resources decision to deny the company a permit to operate as a hazardous-waste management facility; the DNR last week announced it had asked the Missouri Attorney General's office to take legal action against the company for "recurring violations" at the facility and its failure to submit an adequate application for technical review.

1966

Five men from two Lutheran churches here have been appointed to the steering committee to plan the beginning of a new Lutheran Mission in north Cape Girardeau; those named are Robert Kelpe and Stan Grimm from St. Andrew and E.E. Vogel, Oliver Lange and Marvin Campbell from Trinity.

The 75th anniversary of the Zion Methodist Church near Old Appleton is celebrated; the morning worship service is conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Loren Wolff, and a basket dinner is served at noon; a song service is held in the afternoon, and the church history is given by Sloan Tuschhoff.

1941

Three hundred and eight new street signs have been installed at Cape Girardeau intersections as the result of a campaign by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees; steel signs, readable at a great distance, are mounted on concrete posts, which were constructed by National Youth Administration workers under supervision of the city, which also installed the signs.

It appears Orville Zimmerman, who now is serving his fourth term as representative in the 10th District, may have some opposition in the Democratic primary a year from now; Roy Harper, a lawyer of Caruthersville, Missouri, has been mentioned as a likely candidate.

1916

Eli Jasper Warren, 39, is ground to death in an augur conveyor at the cement plant in the far south end of Cape Girardeau in the morning; he was married and the father of three small children.

Linus Penzel of Jackson is awarded a contract by the Cape Special Road District to build the "wing walls" of the Sloan Creek bridge in the north part of town; his bid is for $5.80 per cubic yard of concrete; the district will furnish the gravel, and he the other material and labor; the work will require about 150 yards of concrete.
